The Platinum Preppy fountain pen is one of the best values for the money! This is a fantastic starter fountain pen, or great for lending to a friend. This pen features a crystal clear plastic body, and a stainless steel nib. The Preppy accepts Platinum cartridges or a Platinum converter to fill with bottled ink. It comes with one black ink cartridge. The Platinum converter is sold separately.

By converting this pen to an eyedropper, you can fill the entire barrel with ink for maximum ink capacity! All you need to do is add an o-ring and a small amount of silicone grease to the threads (available separately).

Scratchy nib eyedropper fail

If you want to start with a cheap pen to see if you might like to use a fountain pen then this is fine, it's cheap. Once you buy any other fountain pen on the planet, I think this will go right in the trash.

nervous to buy any pen other than this one

I have used this pen for 2ish years now. I bought one after losing my favorite TWSBI and wanted to try some more affordable options. This pen is by far my favorite out of any entry level pen. I keep it filled with Noodler's Baystate Blue straight into the barrel with the o ring. I rinse every time I refill, and do a deep clean every so often. I've put it through **** carrying it around, traveling with it, dropping it, etc. At one point, I dropped it straight on the nib bending it to a 90 degree angle. Before buying another nib, I used jewelry pliers to bend it back. Shockingly, it still flows smoothly and I never replaced it. At some point, the cap cracked. I have it tightly wrapped with packing tape and it has held on for months like that, however I am recently starting to struggle with the cap staying in place when the pen is in my bag. I'm considering trying a kaweco or beginner sailor, but I'm nervous that I will miss my $7 platinum preppy after spending more money. Anyways, great pen for gremlins like myself (and will probably last longer for anyone who treats their pen with decency). hope this helps!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Platinum ink cartridges, which are available in a few colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
