The Platinum Preppy fountain pen is one of the best values for the money! This is a fantastic starter fountain pen, or great for lending to a friend. This pen features a translucent black body, a clear cap, black trim, and a stainless steel nib. As a Japanese-made pen, the nib runs on the narrow side. The Preppy accepts proprietary Platinum ink cartridges (one black cartridge is included) or a Platinum converter (sold separately) to fill with bottled ink.

By converting this pen to an eyedropper, you can fill the entire barrel with ink for maximum ink capacity! All you need to do is add an o-ring and a small amount of silicone grease to the threads (available separately).

Great for the price

Writes well with the extra fine nib. Really a great starter fountain pen.

Great little knockabout pen; Smoother nibs than expected

I needed a pen that wouldn't break the bank or break my heart if it rolled off the desk and broke or "grew legs" and walked away. ;-) With that in mind, I bought a Preppy with F nib and one with EF since I was unsure which I would prefer. As soon as my Preppies arrived, I popped in the cartridges and took them for test writes. I was amazed! Both nibs write smoothly, better than I thought they would, even the EF. I plan to convert both to eyedropper pens. The Fine nib will be filled with Lexington Gray for all the meeting notes I take, and I'm thinking the Extra Fine will be filled with Lamy Ruby for invoice notations. I would buy Preppy pens again without hesitation.

Great pen for the price.

Comfortable, reliable, good for sketching. The medium nib is comparable to an 0.7 mm gel pen. Some line variation for sketching. Does not dry out when not used for several days at least.

This is a excellent pen Nice ink flow easy start has not dried out on me. And the cartridge lasts a long time.

Preppy

I have a couple of these economical pens , purchased specifically for the ef nibs. One I moved to one of Platinum's Plaisir to make a more durable pen. My major issue with the Preppy is the pocket clip is too fragile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Platinum ink cartridges, which are available in a few colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
