The Platinum Preppy fountain pen is one of the best values for the money! This is a fantastic starter fountain pen, or great for lending to a friend. This pen features a clear plastic body with blue accents, and a stainless steel nib. As a Japanese-made pen, the nib runs on the narrow side. The Preppy accepts proprietary Platinum ink cartridges (one blue cartridge is included) or a Platinum converter (sold separately) to fill with bottled ink.

By converting this pen to an eyedropper, you can fill the entire barrel with ink for maximum ink capacity! All you need to do is add an o-ring and a small amount of silicone grease to the threads (available separately).

Preppy Pen

Love the preppy pen. It's lightweight therefore easy to handle and the fine point is exactly the correct nib for me. I feel I have control over my penmanship when I write with this pen.

The perfect home for Noodler's Baystate Blue

When I want to dress it up, I can just put the nib and converter from the Preppy into any Platinum Plaisir. But honestly - I really love Baystate Blue in the Preppy just fine. It's an amazingly pleasant writer. Fruit juicy medium (0.5 mm) nib. Crazy great value for under $10!

Great pen with a Medium nib!!!

I have recently discovered the Platinum Preppy after hearing Brian and Drew go on forever about how great a pen this is. Frankly, I didn't believe them. But lie, they did not! This is a fabulous pen!! The blue is pretty. The pen is surprisingly comfortable, and when capped, the ink won't dry out for a year. So it's great to put the Pigment Blue cartridge in and use it when I want to address and envelope. And this color doesn't just come in a fine nib, it comes in a medium, too!!! And the medium is smooth and flows well. I am so impressed with this pen, I have purchased a few more to give to fountain pen virgins who want to try one. The price of the pen and the ink can't be beat and your newbie friend won't find the pen dried out when they go to use it 6 months from now! I am so glad I finally listened to Brian and Drew! Thanks guys!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Platinum ink cartridges, which are available in a few colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
