How to Fill a Vacuum-Filling Fountain Pen!

Overview

Vacuum fillers are a fascinating fusion of function and flair in the world of fountain pens! While they may seem complex at first, mastering their filling process is easier than you think. In this guide, I’ll demonstrate how to fill a TWSBI Vac700R vacuum filling fountain pen, but these steps apply to other vacuum fillers like the Pilot Custom 823 as well.

Step-by-Step Guide to Filling a Vacuum Filling Pen

Step 1: Unscrew the cap and set aside

Step 1: Unscrew the cap and set aside

First, remove the pen cap and place it somewhere safe to avoid misplacing it. Ensure the pen is ready for filling by checking that the nib and grip section are clean.

Step 2: Unscrew filler knob

Step 2: Unscrew filler knob

Next, hold the pen securely and twist the filler knob counterclockwise until it moves freely. This unlocks the internal vacuum mechanism needed for filling.

Step 3: Pull rod back until it stops

Step 3: Pull rod back until it stops

Then, gently pull the filler knob upward until it reaches its full extension. This motion draws air into the chamber, preparing the pen for ink intake.

Step 4: Insert pen into ink

Step 4: Insert pen into ink

After you pull the rod upwards, submerge the entire nib and grip section into the ink bottle. Make sure the filler hole, located near the nib, is fully covered to allow proper ink flow.

Step 5: Push down the rod

Step 5: Push down the rod

With the nib still submerged, press the filler knob down in a smooth, controlled motion. This action creates a vacuum, and as the rod reaches the bottom, ink rushes into the chamber.

Step 6: Repeat the process a few times

Step 6: Repeat the process a few times

To maximize ink capacity, pull the rod back up and push it down a few times, ensuring a complete fill.

Step 7: Wipe off excess ink

Step 7: Wipe off excess ink

Next, carefully remove the pen from the ink bottle and use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to wipe the nib and grip. This prevents ink drips and keeps the pen clean for use.

Step 8: Tighten the filler knob back onto the pen

Step 8: Tighten the filler knob back onto the pen

Finally, tighten the filler knob securely. When writing, slightly unscrew the knob to allow ink flow. There’s no need to pull the piston rod back unless you’re refilling.
