2ml sample of Jacques Herbin 1670 Rouge Hematite shimmering fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial. It is a red ink with a gold shimmer/sheen.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens. We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging. You will also want to be diligent about cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

Dropper Experiment

I have been looking for a shimmer/sheen ink to add in my current ink collection. Emerald of Chivor has taken my heart ever since I got it. I decided to try out Jacques Herbin 1670 line one by one. There are more details in the picture. : )These are created by using dropper taking samples directly from the vials dropping onto the papers. No pens are involved in the process. P.S. please excuse my english... I can never spell words right. : ////

Rouge Hematite

Tomoe River. 1.1mm stub. Kind of a boring orange, didn't see much pink or sheen.

Lovely strawberry red

The photo I included doesn't quite do it justice. But also feel that Goulet's scan is a little light/pink. The true color is somewhere in the middle.

A very good red

A very nice red that shades between bright and a deep, almost brown hue with a slight gold shimmer. Not much like the photos, but very nice. Flows nicely even from a fine nib and dries fairly quickly. The shimmer doesn't show at best with a fine line, but it's there.

Not for me

I really liked the orange shimmer in the sample on the Goulet Pens website but when the sample arrived and I tested it out, the coloring was very plain. I've got it in my Lamy Safari (M) right now and after reading the reviews about clogging, I'm glad I only pulled a small amount from the sample I bought. I'll hold on to it and maybe buy a dip pen?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink (a fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in) is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size with shimmering ink. While it is safe to use in fountain pens, it may require a little extra maintenance.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens, especially with finer nibs.

We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling, and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging.

You will also want to be diligent about regularly cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

What does it mean if an ink has shading or sheen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading is a common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen is a characteristic of a fountain pen ink where, when ink pools, another color can be seen on top of the ink. It is more pronounced when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen may help obtain better sheening results in your writing.

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
