This 50ml glass bottle of 1670 Rouge Hematite (scarlet red) ink was first released in 2010 in celebration of Jacques Herbin's 340th anniversary, and contains a gold shimmer/sheen. Each bottle cap is hand dipped in sealing wax, with a stamped "1670" seal on the front of the bottle, and is individually packaged in a collector edition box.

Rouge translates to red, and Hematite is an iron ore that when pulverized into a powder, can be used as red pigment. With a dark red color and earthy tone, it is a reminder of the historic color of the Herbin logo and the sealing wax used by the members of the royal courts. This rich deep dye ink will bring brightness and majesty to all your writing.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens. We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging. You will also want to be diligent about cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

Not as nice as other Herbin shimmer inks...

I want to like this ink, and do like its color. I love the Storm Grey and the Emerald of Chivor, but this red ink does not behave as well as they do. The grey and emerald inks flow easily in a wet pen, and deliver variable but significant amounts of shimmer, but for some reason the Rouge ink does not deliver the shimmer well at all; it seems not to pass through the capillary-tube-like feed system (a wet-writing Conklin pen... I never use these shimmer inks in a really expensive pen, as the shimmer does build up in the feeds. I only use in pens whose feed I can easily remove and clean). As the shimmer builds up, the pen becomes progressively drier. Won't buy again, though I will continue to purchase the grey and green versions.

Best Red ever

This is the best red I have ever used. I use it with a broad nib.

Excellent Ink

Very nice ink, great shade of orange. Yellow-gold sparkles and sheen under correct light. I was worried it would clog up my pen, but actually flows better than Monteverde California Teal in my Conklin All American Limited Addition with a Broad nib.

Shimmertastic, Baby!

I got this in my birthday sample group. I had sort of rolled my eyes at the idea of shimmer inks before, but this beautiful ink made me a believer. It sat in my pen for a month and there was no clog. It flowed smoothly. The base rosy color is gorgeous to begin with, and the golden shimmer was subtle but unmistakable. I took notes on a Zoom meeting and it made me happy.

Nice Springtime Raspbery Red

Really nice ink. Beautiful dark raspberry pink. I didn't not get any of the gold shading as seen in the color sample on line. I'm fine with that, I inked up a Pineider Sunset yellow fine nib pen. I didn't see any of the color shading that other have commented on nor is this what I would consider a Christmas red. I have Visconti Bordeaux or Herbin Rouge Grenat for Christmas Red. Since I'm a overhand lefty I didn't get any smearing. Overall I am happy with the qualities of this ink.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pens can accept this ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Any of these fountain pens will work with bottled ink. Typically, as long as the pen can be filled with a converter, has a built-in filling mechanism like a piston, or can be eyedropper-filled, it can accept bottled ink. You can also refill an empty ink cartridge from bottled ink using an ink syringe.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink (a fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in) is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size with shimmering ink. While it is safe to use in fountain pens, it may require a little extra maintenance.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens, especially with finer nibs.

We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling, and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging.

You will also want to be diligent about regularly cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.
