The Custom 845 is the newest series to launch in the Custom line of fountain pens for the United States. The Custom line was first introduced by Pilot in 1971 to create a range of fountain pens that are truly tailored to the users writing preferences. Each series in the Custom line offers distinctive benefits, ranging from nib sizes to ink reservoir/converters to body style or size.

The Custom 845 is extremely popular worldwide because of its unique Urushi lacquer finish, two-toned 18k gold nib (size #15) and large ebonite barrel size. A Pilot Con-70 converter is included, but you can also use proprietary Pilot ink cartridges if you prefer. This exceptional Custom fountain pen is packaged in an elegant gift box.

Urushi lacquer comes from the sap of the Asian lacquer tree. When applied to the pen barrel, it hardens and absorbs moisture from the air, resulting in a shiny coat. Creating an Urushi lacquer fountain pen is an exacting and complex process because the lacquer must be carefully applied to the pen barrel in numerous hand painted layers. This traditional Japanese technique ultimately enhances both the pens’ beauty and longevity. Urushi coating will withstand corrosion from water, acids, alcohol, and even temperature changes, making the Custom 845 the perfect pen to use every day and pass down to future generations.

Beautiful Finish and nib

This pen is gorgeous and the smoothest writer I have (medium nib). The Urishi finish and two-tone nib are stunning!

Very pleased

Figured I ought to leave a review for this pen, since no one else has. I'll start by saying that I've had it for about a week, and in that time I've used it about every single day. It's beautiful to look at; the urushi lacquer is almost mirror like, and it has a gorgeous sheen. It has a classic, iconic look, so if you're into that this pen is right up you're alley. It's surprisingly light for its size, and I've never felt tired from writing with it after a long session. If anything, the size of the pen seems to make it even more comfortable. The nib writes very smoothly, and sometimes it feels like I'm gliding across water with it. It doesn't give much line variation, but honestly that's a minor thing. That two toned, 18kt gold is also easy to look at; I've caught myself staring at it more than a few times. Now, this is a purchase you need to put some serious thought into before committing. The price tag is hefty, and it's definitely not something you should buy as a starter. I had three other pens under my belt before this, and that helped me to know what I wanted. It was coming from a brand I trusted, and I'd been wanting to add an urushi lacquered pen to my collection for a while. Do I regret the purchase? No. Again, I've always wanted a pen with urushi lacquering, and Pilot's high performance standard is on full display here. it writes good, it looks good, it feels good. The stars aligned to make this pen a desirable purchase for me, even with the high price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
