A Goulet Pens exclusive, limited run!

This resin from Turnt Pen Co called "Barrier Reef" features a swirled pattern of a variety of blue, white, tan, and pink colors. Accented by silver trim, it comes with a silver #6 JoWo steel nib and it fills via standard international cartridge/converter (included).

It includes a converter and two black Montegrappa short standard international ink cartridges. Each pen’s pocket clip terminates in a rolling ball to facilitate ingress and egress from one’s pocket. As a final touch, the pen’s cap is subtly engraved with the contemporary logo of Montegrappa, in a complementary tone.

We do our best to photograph the pens to show how they will appear in person, but due to the nature of the material, there will be some variation in the pattern seen here. This adds an element of uniqueness to the pen, with no two patterns being exactly the same. We cannot honor special requests.

Dream writer

Having purchased the Beach and it was my first experience with Montegrappa and I was blown away with the smooth writing experience, I had to purchase the Barrier Reef to add to my collection. Both pens are simply beautiful not only visually but also in writing experience. Great service and delivery from the team at Goulet. I just wish I had an unlimited budget!!!

Nicer than I anticipated!

I ordered this pen after drooling over it for a couple weeks, and it has become one of my favorite EDC pens (every day carry). The JaWo nib, is of course, top tier, and I love the etched nib. I have a medium nib, which is not overly thick, but does write a bit wet on this pen. I like that, as I use 100 gsm paper for writing. The pen is well-balanced when capped, and has a natural beauty to it with the colors of sand and sea - this is what drew me to the pen in the first place. It is made in Italy, and has the colors of Italy, including the Pompeii Red, the sun, sand, and blue sea. I highly recommend this pen, as it has exceeded my expectations. I have a collection of fountain pens, and this is one of my favorites now.

Having some crow pie here...

I've been watching the Montegrappa Elmos for a while now waiting for an acrylic I couldn't resist and trying to talk myself into dropping more than $150 for a SS nib. I almost caved to the beach colorway but the barrier reef acrylic is the one that did it. As a dedicated Pilot and Sailor fan, I don't expect (and am not claiming) this nib is that gold standard but it holds its own with SS nibs I've gotten on those lines. While not usually a fan of shimmer in pens, the subtle shimmer in the barrier reef evokes sand and abalone shell so it works on this model, I think. The barrel's just gorgeous (!!) and the build quality is fantastic. I've never had a converter that screwed into the grip before; they've all been friction fit. The converter also has a good capacity--probably double the Pilot con 40. The grip is well-designed and formed without any sharp ridges or angles to force an adaptive grip. Watching Brian's Montegrappa Elmo video will walk you through the strengths of this line as well. The only grump I have is the brass lining of the barrel does make it much heavier than my Pilots or Sailors so I haven't decided yet that it's a favorite for correspondence as this weight also directly effects the nib's performance. If you like the metal Falcons or other heavier barrels, though, this won't be an adaptation for your writing style.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this pen with ink cartridges? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses standard international ink cartridges, a common size which is available in many colors from various brands.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
