This Pilot Custom Urushi lacquered ebonite fountain pen was created by maki-e artisans (kokkokai) in Japan. It features the Roiro Urushi technique in solid vermillion red. The pen has a two-tone 18k gold nib in the large #30 size. A Pilot Con-70 converter is included, but you can also use proprietary Pilot ink cartridges if you prefer. It comes packaged in a gift box.

Lacquering has been used in Japan for thousands of years. The Pilot Custom Urushi is crafted from Japanese ebonite and lacquered using only pure Urushi lacquer. Like their Namiki pens, Pilot uses a lacquering technique called Roiro, which requires substantial time and skill to create a uniform and mirror-like finish. Each Custom Urushi pen is lacquered, cured, and polished three times to create a beautiful quality result.

Beautiful, big, & flexy

This pen was my first really nice FP-over $200-and it spoiled me forever. First, the craftsmanship is #1, every detail is right. This particular pen's nib is a little soft, so that it flexes for wide line width. It has a little feedback-I would not consider it scratchy. If you are looking for something larger with good line variation in pen to last generations, and are fortunate enough to have the money for such a toy, consider this beauty.

Great line variation

The first pen I have >$700 or so. Glad I did. I especially enjoy the smooth nib and the ease w which I get line variation. Makes writing a lot more fun when I can have more control over the width w downstroke (the nib is soft, and spreads well), Unlike some folks, I post all my Urushi pens; no scratches yet. Ultimately, the pen is a tool, and like any other tool, it is meant to be used. If I wanted it to be preserved for later generations, I would put it in a hermetically sealed box on the wall. Not.My favorite pen when I want to write an expressive special letter. I did have to try some wetter inks than 4001 Royal Blue (Railroading, dry); settled on DeArtramentis Blue-black...still occasionally RR.

Surprisingly Soft Nib, be aware

I was surprised at how soft the nib. I have other Pilots and Namikis and none of them have soft nibs. This may be just the thing for you, or it may not. The point of my review is simply to bring to your attention that it's a different writing experience from other Pilots and Namikis I own. The pen is beautiful, functions flawlessly, and a good value from this great Company.

My experience with goulet pens has been outstanding. The process of buying the pen was extremely easy and satisfying. I am having a little trouble with the pen however which skips and sometimes railroads. I am sure it just needs turning and have no worries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
