The LAMY safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

The safari comes with an interchangeable silver steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away. If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter.

Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

Great Beginner Fountain Pen!

While I have bought a previous fountain pen before, that one did not turn out as incredibly satisfying as the Lamy Safari. Writing with this fountain pen is such an incredible and pleasant experience that even if you hold it at an awkward angle, the Lamy Safari will still work as intended and it easily forgives poor hand positioning habits— it is that good!

The Lamy Safari is such a fun fountain pen to write with and it's a great entry into the world of fountain pens that I'd recommend anyone to get it!

Easy to care for, functions just as intended. I now own 3 Safaris so I can use multiple colored inks at once and none of them have failed me yet!

Not the best.

I have filled this pen with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Red Ink. I have found that this tends to stain the pen around the nib. It has also stained the inside of the cap and the inside of the body of the pen where the converter is. The pen does write well and is always ready to write however the constant cleaning of the cap is annoying. It is also hard to fill with the converter, not taking up the ink, must try two or more times to get it half full. I won't be taking this pen out of the house or putting it in any of my sketching bags for fear of leaking. I bought it because of the color, probably will not buy another Lamy. Have had less problems with pens that were even cheaper than this.

How do I fill this LAMY fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

This fountain pen can fill with proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, or from a LAMY converter.

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, which are available in a range of colors.

As for converters, LAMY does make two different converters - the red Z28, and the black Z27. All of their fountain pens (except the 2000) can accept the black Z27; typically this converter is included with the higher-end LAMY pens like the aion, cp1, scala, and studio. The red Z28 has additional knobs for a more secure installation that is compatible (and sold separately) on the AL-star, joy, and safari.

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck. 

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
