A fantastic value from Pilot, the Metropolitan is a favorite first fountain pen. Part of the Retro Pop collection, this light green metal bodied pen has a glossy marble-patterned accent band, silver trim, and a steel nib. It comes with a black Pilot ink cartridge and a squeeze converter to use with bottled ink, or you can upgrade to a Con-40 converter if you prefer that style.

The fountain pen comes packaged in a gift box.

Japanese nibs are usually ground finer than their Western counterparts; you can take a look at our Nib Nook to see writing comparisons.

Wonderful Pen

For a relatively inexpensive pen, it is a dream to use. Highly recommend and it comes in lots of fun colors

For the price, this pen is great. After purchasing this one I got a Lamy with an extra fine tip and they both are about the same size. Really surprised with Pilots ability to have fine tips (I purchased this with a medium tip). The weight of the pen is also nice, very light and balanced. I work outside and the pen has held up quite well.

A Solid Choice

My overall experience with using the Metropolitan has been solid and enjoyable. It has performed flawlessly in providing a good line of ink and the balance posted is fine for my needs. I believe it is a solid value and based on other reviewers comments will be part of my 'stable' for a long time.Prior to getting the Metropolitan with a fine nib I had a Kaweco Sport and a Lamy Safari - both with fine nibs. It took a bit to adjust to the different feel on paper and narrower line of ink but no other issues. All three have been reliable with start up and ink flow, although the metropolitan has been slightly wetter I have only used Pilot ink with it. I can openly recommend any of the three as a starter pen option. The Metropolitan is smaller in circumference, the Kaweco is a shorter pocket pen, and the Safari has a snap cap that has not come off but doesn't seem quite as secure as the other two pens. If I could only have one of the three, as a starter pen, well that is a very tough scenario that I don't have a clear answer to since they have slightly different attributes. To a degree, like Brian, my list of one would be more than one.

This is my first ever fountain pen. I love it! It’s well balanced in hand, and the smooth metal barrel feels expensive. I love the green, and plan to order another color soon. Writes smoothly, and came in a nice box. Videos on the Goulet site were thorough, and helped me choose a great starter pen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
