2ml sample of Jacques Herbin Orange Soleil fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial.

Established in Paris in 1670, the Maison HERBIN initially specialized in the sealing wax, fine stationery and ink trade, and imported shellac from India. Since this founding their aim has been to "Give body and color to our thoughts." The adventure of one of the oldest ink makers in the world began over three hundred years ago but its products have expanded into a complete universe of inks, writing instruments, stationery, and other goods for amateurs and connoisseurs of the lettering arts.

Perfect Orange

I love this ink! I currently have it in a kaweco sport with a broad nib and it's juicy and has a great flow. It doesn't feather on my cheap paper and has some lovely subtle shading (I did get a tiny bit of feathering on a coated postcard, but that was to be expected - it's still legible and dried quickly enough). The overall color is bright and saturated, and easy to read, perfect for fall and Halloween. It dries very quick, which is another plus, it's just a wonderful ink overall and I've already ordered a full bottle because I think it's going to be a favorite again and again.

Vibrant citrus orange

Good hue. Looks like a balanced vibrant orange as opposed to leaning more towards red like most others or towards yellow like a handful of 'orange' inks.

Orange Soleil is the new Orange Indien

I've used Herbin's Orange Indien as a signature color for over 15 years; one thing I always wished I could change about it was the way it darkened with a reddish-brown tinge as the ink ran low in the pen. Orange Soleil seems to have solved that; it's bright, clear, and appears to hold a fairly consistent shade over use (though time will tell better). Even up against a fresh pull of Orange Indien on the same page, it's distinctly orange; like the skin of an actual orange up against the skin of a blood orange. The flow isn't too wet (Waterman fine nib) and it dries quick enough for everyday use. I still have half a bottle of Indien but may just ditch it to switch to Soleil.

My Favorite Orange

I love this orange. Behaves well and is the best shade of orange I've found so far. Will be buying a full bottle soon.

Best behaving ink

This is one of the best behaving inks I've ever used! At first I was simply impressed by the flow and zesty orange color, but then I used it to write on a sticker label which has horrible quality paper, and there was basically no feathering! If my pilot inks feather on these sticker labels but Orange Soleil did not, then this is definitely something worth trying. Dries faster than Apache sunset which is another plus. The color is a little bright for reading a lot, but the saturation and wetness is unbeatable. This ink also feels very lubricated because writing on cheap paper was even a smooth experience for me. I can't wait to purchase a full bottle of this! Also marking medium for water resistance because I have no clue on that - haven't tried it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
