The Pilot Custom 74 is a simple yet sophisticated fountain pen. The minimalistic design with a transparent blue-grey cap and barrel makes it a must-have for any pen enthusiast.

Pilot is thrilled to announce the newest color launch within the Custom 74 season inspired collection of 2021. The first launch was the spring-inspired Forest Green. The second launch was the summer-inspired Grenadine. This third and final launch in this series for autumn/winter is Blue Stone, a beautiful, translucent slate blue hue. This sophisticated color evokes relaxation and happiness – the steely sky of a wintery day.

The Custom 74 is designed to delight the fountain pen collector with its translucent ‘demonstrator-style’ barrel and archetypal embellishments. A special mechanism in the converter ensures a fluid and continuous flow of ink with no skipping for a premium, expressive writing experience. The #5 nib is finely crafted from 14-karat gold and is rhodium plated to match the rhodium trim and clip. The nib is available in extra fine, fine, medium or broad point sizes.

This classical demonstrator pen is refillable for continued use with a proprietary Pilot ink cartridge or Pilot’s CON-70 converter (both are included) and arrives packaged in a striking presentation box. The Pilot CON-70 converter holds an ample ink supply while uniquely combining the characteristics of a vacuum-filling and push-button converter.

Pilot Custom 74

Very smooth. The converter requires some ink depth. Works fine overall.

Can't have it all - but pretty close (EF nib)

The requirements were simple enough; good looking, reliable, gold nib, and something that won't bleed through cheap paper. TONS of choices out there, and all roads kept leading back to the 74. But, to accommodate every sort of paper something's gotta give. And in this case it's nib width. Some use words like "feedback", "toothy" or "scratchy" for the EF nib - and they're right - but you can also use "disenchanted" and "unsatiated" and still be talking about the same thing. No ragrets.

Excellent as expected...mostly

Overall quality is what you'd expect. Has a slight heft in the hand while still remaining relatively light. You can feel that the resin is high quality/dense. The fit and finish of the assemblies is all tight tolerances and the converter fills effortlessly. The nib was slightly surprising to me I was expecting an entirely smooth (like my TWSBI Eco T) feel, but the Pilot is notably toothy in feedback feel. Not scratchy, but pencil-like. I was a little disappointed. Maybe I should've done research. However, with a few changes of ink, it has settled in nicely and I now really enjoy writing with it. A nib flush should've come first. I'll do that next time. I can't say this is an exceptional value for what you get, so bear that in mind. If it's important to you to own a Pilot, get it if not, get a few more TWSBIs instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
