Kakuno is a delightful fountain pen that is ideal for both first time fountain pen users and experienced writers. "Kakuno" means "to write" in Japanese, and that's just what this pen helps users to do by featuring an appealing smiley face on the steel nib, when oriented upward, ensures perfect nib orientation.

This grey resin fountain pen with a blue cap has a hexagonal shape, similar to the classic wooden pencil, so that the pen is comfortable to hold and doesn't roll away. Indentations in the cap also make it easy to grasp when uncapping the pen.

A black Pilot ink cartridge is included to get you started writing right away. It also accepts a Pilot CON-40 or CON-70 converter (sold separately). Novices will soon be on their way to becoming seasoned fountain pen users, and seasoned users will enjoy the fun, exuberant writing the Kakuno fountain pen delivers. Everyone can enjoy writing with a Kakuno fountain pen.

Looks-3, Writes-9

A very nice pen. The nib is the same as found on Pilot's Metropolitan and Prera pens, but the grip is superior to the Metropolitan. A very smooth gripe that is long enough not to be interfered by the cap recess, a big issue for me with the Metropolitan. And the grip is not completely round, but planed so that the fingers grip the pen better, a bit like the Lamy Safari. The pen is not good looking in any of its plastic colors, but a very fine writing instrument that I would put up against more beautiful rivals.

My second time buying the kakuno from pilot. Very reliable, trusted and convenient compare to the German counterparts when its comes to price. Ink flow on point every single time that I change the cartridges, no problem at all so far. Good buy for me and anyone else interested in this fountain pen.

Happy nib, happy me

I bought this on a whim expecting something I could just toss in a bag and forget about, as a pen that I wouldnt mind breaking. I was dead wrong. This little plastic pen is smooth, light, and a daily driver, living perpetually in my midori travelers notebook. I adore this thing, and the smiling nib just cracks me up. Great pen for the price. I see many more of them in my future.

Great beginner pen

I just started going down the rabbit whole of fountain pens and this was one of the first one I purchased. It's great for beginners, students, or taking to work since it's one of the more affordable ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
