The Sailor King of Pens “Hanafuda” Limited Edition fountain pen collection pays homage to Japanese artistry and tradition, and is available in two distinct versions, each with its own rich, evocative design inspired by classic Hanafuda themes.
Hanafuda is a traditional Japanese card game, where each card represents one of the twelve months with seasonal themes. Players compete by forming specific combinations, making it a game of strategy, symbolism, and elegance. These cards have long been a cherished part of Japanese culture, celebrated for their beautiful artwork and historical significance.
Each pen is created with Yubi maki-e underdrawings, hand-applied by skilled craftsmen, and is individually signed and numbered by the artist, Isana Kobayashi. This careful process makes every pen a true work of art, showcasing a fusion of modern and traditional maki-e techniques.
Translating to “A Moonlit Drink,” the Tsukimi-de-ippai version features a grey-blue body with a burgundy cap that celebrates the serene beauty of a moonlit night. The design captures the tranquility of Japan’s autumn season, a time traditionally associated with moon-viewing festivities.
Hanafuda is crafted as part of Sailor’s prestigious King of Pen (KOP) series and features a luxurious 21K solid gold nib, available in both medium and broad sizes.
This fountain pen comes with a Sailor proprietary converter, a proprietary Sailor ink cartridge, a bottle of Sailor ink, and a cleaning cloth.
