Ravens have long held an almost mystical fascination in the human psyche. From Edgar Allen Poe to Norse mythology, depictions of ravens have long interested our storytelling.

Because of this history, Esterbrook was inspired to create a pen that has all of the subtle, mysterious charm of the intelligent and curious corvid. Introducing the Estie Raven. With its matte black body and matching nib and trim, this pen is a departure from our regular colorway -- but no less exciting.

This comfortably balanced Estie Raven, part of the regular lineup, is offered in a fountain pen with black trim. A sleek clip provides a clean accent for the cap and slides easily into a shirt pocket. A cushion cap closure provides a secondary seal to ensure a wet point. Finally, the fountain pen is equipped with a black #6 JoWo steel nib. Most exciting of this release is the button piston mechanism for the Raven release. With a simple press, you can fill your pen for an easy, mess-free experience. This is the latest in a suite of new innovations from the brand and we are excited to debut it with the Raven!

I saved for this pen, it did not disappoint!

This is am amazing pen. It is my first Esterbrook pen. I love fine nibs but didn't know when they are dipped to make this exquisite black nib that it would write as a medium. I now know but wouldn't change a thing! This will be my daily work pen. Now to find the perfect black ink. Here is a video to get more on the usage of the pen. https://youtu.be/CwyYieoUvr8

Esterbrook Raven

I really like this pen. The finish is unique and it is well made. It just feels different in the hand and the fine nib writes superbly. A great addition to any fountain pen lovers collection.

Matte Black Magic, but unmagical markings

Finally a true matte black fountain pen with a nice cigar shape, window and piston filler! However, the quality control is not particularly good from the two that I’ve had. Both show marks in the black finish very easily. The screw top is not particularly smooth and in fact somehow it manages to scrape the ink window and leave small marks on it. Lastly, the material is a lint magnet so be prepared to constantly dust off the finish. The nib is good and works fine, but the other issues and lack of quality control from Esterbrook at this price point is embarrassing. I really want to like this pen, but there are others in this price range that offer more value. Hopefully, they will release a version 2 with improvements. This is my first Esterbrook and possibly my last.

My new Esterbrook Estie Piston

I love this pen. I bought the Non piston version last year and fell in love with Esterbrook. I have since bought a limited edition and this new piston loader. The only knock against this pen is that you cannot super load it. That is a very minor concern when coupled with the ease of reloading and cleaning.

Little expensive for the normal #6 Jowo nib pen
However manufacture level is great, fun piston-ish filling
Black is Sooooo BLACK
Worth the money

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
