The Amethyst Whirlwind features the same material used on the Conklin 1898 Misto Purple. In Italian Misto means “mixed” or “mixed together”, which refers to the NEW unique resin mix of various multiple colors for each pen. Mixing resins for luxury pens requires precision and attention to detail to achieve a superior and aesthetically pleasing result. The process is started by selecting a high-quality liquid resin, choosing suitable color combinations, and following a precise step by step process of mixing the colors together.
Each pen is numbered on the back of the cap.
The Duragraph draws its inspiration from the rich heritage of the Conklin brand, which was purchased and revived by Yafa in 2009. It is manufactured in Asia, assembled and distributed from Canoga Park, California, and pays tribute to its roots with a “Toledo, Ohio” engraving on its nib and barrel. The cap top is embellished with the Conklin Est. 1898 logo and the cap band are engraved with the famous Duragraph model script font with three Conklin Crescent logos on either side of the model name. The fountain pen comes with a converter and a cartridge.
The Conklin Duragraph fountain pen is offered with your choice of a reliable, smooth-writing German made JoWo #6 rose gold-plated steel nib in extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, or 1.1mm stub, or the JoWo Omniflex flexible rose gold-plated steel nib for variation in line width.
Our note about the JoWo Omniflex nib: This flex nib will allow you to experience more bounce and softness than writing with conventional nibs. You can achieve some line variation with a little additional downward pressure, to a point. We recommend flexing the nib to about twice the line width that you would see without using any pressure. Please take care to avoid pressing too hard on the nib, as over-flexing could prevent the tines from returning fully to their original position and decrease or stop your ink flow.
We do our best to photograph the pens to show how they will appear in person, but due to the nature of this unique material, there will be much variation in the patterns and colors seen here. This adds an element of uniqueness to the pen, with no two patterns being exactly the same. We cannot honor special requests.

This pen is a smooth writer, with a hint of feedback that I personally find enjoyable. I love the metal rose gold accents, and the #6 size nib is beautiful. My one and only complaint is that the colors of my particular pen don't lean amethyst. It is more blue, red and white. I am okay with this, as it is such a pleasant writing experience.
As always Conklin is a great pen. However this is more red and blue than purple. The stub nib is giving me some hard starts and the flow of ink is a little slow. Besides this little things it is a great pen with amazing color and very nice material. The mixing is great. Conklin is always a guarantee of good pen for a reasonable price. Goulet is giving an excellent service as ever with great deals, low delivery time and excellent customer service!! Thank you Goulet for another great pen
I am a Conklin and Duragraph fan/user and over the years, with Goulet exclusive limited editions… have become a collector. So when I saw the new editions in the mixed resins I jumped on all three. They are all reliable Duragraphs with the addition of being limited and quite stunning. My Favorite is the Topaz which has a primary amber color in the mix. Amethyst is second, heavy on the blues and red. And Rainbow is my third favorite with pink showing primary. I have favorites but love them all. The nibs (broad, stub and Omniflex) write with the feel of JoWo with the added Conklin stamp and crescent.
FAQs about Fountain Pens
How do I fill a fountain pen with ink?
It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.
Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:
- Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
- Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
- Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
- Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
- Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen?
It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.
It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:
How often do I need to clean my fountain pen?
We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.
Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
My pen won’t write! What do I do?
First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.
We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.
If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.
