Attractive pen writes well.

See subject. This has a good feel. Having such a blended curvy shape, the sharp edges in places are a bit jaring. The fine nib is very fine. I have to use dark inks to increase readability. It's a pen I'll continuously use for fine sketching and editing.

Nice Pen!

I bought the Sheaffer Icon fountain pen in the Red/Black finish with a medium nib because I liked its appearance, and Sheaffer fountain pens are an old favorite. The pen can be posted, but I actually use it unposted.

Working in order of importance from most to least:
the pen writes well, putting down a true medium line with consistent ink flow. The nib is small, similar in size to the one used in Pilot Vanishing Point fountain pens. It has some slight feedback, but isn't scratchy. I was surprised at the feel of the nib: the nib has a slight give, or acts as if it has a tiny shock absorber, for lack of a better description! That is NOT a negative.

The pen's large girth means that the pen is comfortable to hold and can be written with for an extended period of time without fatigue. While large, the pen is relatively lightweight, and nicely balanced.

The appearance is striking, and the matte finish is attractive. The Sheaffer Converter is secure in its attachment to the feed/nib section, and all the parts fit together securely so that the pen has a nice, solid feel to it when one is writing.

Overall, for the price it's a good buy!

Good for the Price

I have used this to practice my penmanship skills over the five days I have owned it. It lays down ink (cartridge) very well for the price point. Unfortunately, I dropped it on a porcelain floor from table height and the finish chipped badly. (The nib was capped, so no harm to the business end.) Be careful if you want to keep the cosmetics flawless.

Sheaffer icon

I had given this pen a 3 star but since I have used it more and more I decided to change to 5 star. It’s beautiful and the size is excellent for me. I have learned not to turn the pen when writing. It is very comfortable to hold and the looks are perfect.

I love it

Bought this because I have a preference for these types of fountain pens. I love the contrast of the red and black colors of the body; the cap clicks satisfyingly onto the body with a magnet, and it writes beautifully smooth (to my admittedly non expert judgement). I also like that it comes with a converter, which works very nicely. All in all I’m very happy with this pen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Sheaffer ink cartridges, which are available in a few colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
