2ml sample of Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi pastel purple fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial.

Nekoyanagi is popular for its chromashading ink properties. This ink looks particularly stunning on water-resistant paper like Tomoe River.

About the Sailor Manyo collection:

Flowers have always been a popular poetic subject dating back to ancient Japanese history. This is the theme for Sailor's Manyo bottled ink series. Based on popular flowers frequently mentioned in Japanese “Manyoshu” – an anthology of compiled ancient poems – Sailor has chosen eight dye-based ink colors to best represent this vibrant palette range.

"Manyosyu" - Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves - is the oldest (c.759) and most revered anthology of Japan's poetic compilations. Over a period of four centuries, 4,516 poems were written by every class of person ranging from Emperors to merchants and farmers. "Manyo" is an abbreviation of "Manyosyu" and its meaning indicates people of all ranks.

"Manyosyu" is often regarded in Japan as a true expression of the Japanese spirit. The themes of the poems relate to love, elegies, nature, the seasons, and so on. Flowers are especially relevant in Japanese culture and about 1,500 of the poems in "Manyosyu" cover some 160 species of plants and 50 different flowers.

Way too light for writing.

This ink was a HUGE disappointment. It's way too light for writing. Coming out of the pen naturally (with a medium nib) it's barely visible. Even flooding the feed, it's too light for writing. I've tried a lot of inks, and this is the first one that I dumped out of my pen without using. I'm especially bummed because I bought two other Sailor inks that are similar, and I'm afraid I'll have the same result with them.

Beautiful

This is one of my favorites to write in my journal with. It reminds of most over the mountains in the morning. It doesn't bleed, writes smoothly and is so beautiful. It is lighter, but I'm the only one reading my writing so I don't mind. Probably not for someone else's everyday, but for me I really love it

Soft and Lovely

My charming boyfriend's favorite ink. The color is very light but still readable, and would make for a lovely piece of art outside of writing. A pale purple, slightly more blue than red, akin to periwinkle. This ink and its brand are quite established, so one can trust in the functional quality of it. No abnormal bleeding, decent gradient, does not smudge when highlighted but is hard to see beneath other colors. Just be aware of it's paleness, but if content will a lighter, less office-hardy ink, then I would absolutely suggest indulging in this gentle hazy hue.

Nice Ink But Too Light

I loved the color of the ink and I like the brand, however I ended up mixing my sample with a few drops of darker purple ink because this ink was too light.

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
