2ml sample of Sailor Manyo Haha pastel blue fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial.

Haha is popular for its chromashading ink properties. This ink looks particularly stunning on water-resistant paper like Tomoe River.

Due to the nature of this particular ink, there can be slight variations in the color. This is completely normal. However we have highlighted the most common color swatch we have seen in our images, but your sample or bottle might vary slightly.

About the Sailor Manyo collection:

Flowers have always been a popular poetic subject dating back to ancient Japanese history. This is the theme for Sailor's Manyo bottled ink series. Based on popular flowers frequently mentioned in Japanese “Manyoshu” – an anthology of compiled ancient poems – Sailor has chosen eight dye-based ink colors to best represent this vibrant palette range.

"Manyosyu" - Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves - is the oldest (c.759) and most revered anthology of Japan's poetic compilations. Over a period of four centuries, 4,516 poems were written by every class of person ranging from Emperors to merchants and farmers. "Manyo" is an abbreviation of "Manyosyu" and its meaning indicates people of all ranks.

"Manyosyu" is often regarded in Japan as a true expression of the Japanese spirit. The themes of the poems relate to love, elegies, nature, the seasons, and so on. Flowers are especially relevant in Japanese culture and about 1,500 of the poems in "Manyosyu" cover some 160 species of plants and 50 different flowers.

I guess it's subjective

I'm writing this review just to add some contrasting opinions. Take it for what it's worth as taste is subjective. Anyway,It's a very pleasant color but it is not your daily writer. In fact, it's hardly useful for writing unless you've got a wide nib, and at that point its too crowded for even standard rule paper. It's decent for drawing if you use it basically like you'd use a hard graphite to sketch out the basic shapes before going in with something darker. I just can't see a decent use case for this ink, which makes me wonder why it's in the "must haves" set. I'm happy with my 2ml sample. I'm glad I got to try it, I just would prefer to not try it again ! seriously though am I missing something? Somebody please tell me why I'm wrong.

Review

Beautiful color, even shades on fine pens, but the color changing only happens with larger nibs. Overall great buy :)Dry time was abt 5 seconds on mixed media paper, and was great for me as a left hended writer

Blue and Pink

This color is so nice and soft and subtle, and the pink shade that shows through where it's thin is just such a gorgeous accent.

I was surprised how nice this actually was.

This was a really nice ink with great shading. Lots of color variation to it, blues to purples.

Sailor Manyo Haha

Very unique shade! It's so gorgeous (especially paired with the right paper) and it makes me think of cotton candy hiding inside the grey. I found this sliiightly on the dry side, but I'm used to/favor wet inks with wet nibs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
