Nice Red

I already have this in my stash, I was just needing to refill my bottle. This is a very nice dark red that I run in my Jinhao 450 only. It writes brilliantly with this pen, no hard starts and I hardly write with it. But when I grab for it, it lays down a beautiful line for anything.

Standard waterproof red document ink

This ink worked really well for what was intended. It's a red ink that dries fairly quickly, doesn't have issues with feathering or bleed through, and is really quite waterproof. Personally, as an artist, I didn't feel inspired to create with it because the red-orange tone of it felt kind of dry and passionless, but if you need a reliable, solid red ink for filling out paperwork, this is your ink.

Meh Color, but Quality Ink

My first impression with the De Atramentis Dark Red Document Ink was that the color was not what I was hoping for. It's a very flat, boring, and dirty red that definitely skews to the orange, especially compared to the pictures. But I do a lot of editing for my writing, and I would prefer a permanent red ink for that if possible. Hence my testing of waterproof red inks. It left me feeling very meh on the color. But onto the functionality... The ink had varied results based on the pen used and the paper written on. Since I greatly appreciated the really thorough reviews others left on here, I want to do the same. PEN: Monteverde Innova EF Nib (drier writer of my two pens)- Copy Paper: Writes decently and smoothly, but feathers a little on the heavier strokes. But minor, and for most things it wouldn't be enough to bother me. The ink dries pretty much instantly on the paper. - Exceed Notebooks: Dries quickly. Writes a little dry, but still fairly smooth. PEN: Hong Dian Black Forest EF Nib (from Amazon) (wetter writer of my two pens)- Copy Paper: It puts down a lot of ink, quite wet. Noticeable spread and feathering, plus some bleed through and heavy ghosting. It flows smoothly, but the appearance of the ink on the paper isn't the greatest. - Exceed Notebooks: This was the combination I liked the most. It wrote wetter than in the MV Innova, and I liked how it felt and looked a lot more. The ink showed up darker since it put down my ink, and improved the overall color, as well as adding some shading variations. OVERALL NOTES: - Color is just meh for me. The ink writes well in both of my pens, does well in the notebooks, not as great on copy paper. I'm not sure I'll upgrade and buy a bottle. Only if my other red options don't pan out better. It works, but it's not a mind-blowingly awesome ink. - Dried very quickly with both pens on all paper. - I blended this roughly 50/50 with De Atramentis Violet Document, and it produced a beautiful color and the ink felt like it performed better overall than the Dark Red did originally (I really liked the Violet Document Ink). So I may end up buying more as a blender ink.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
