LAMY aion Fountain Pen - dark green (Special Edition)

The LAMY aion is a series of writing instruments designed by Jasper Morrison. The dark green body and cap are constructed from solid aluminum, each made from seamless closed components. The body features an anodized matte finish, while the grip has a matte blasted circular-brushed finish. The spring-loaded clip is made from stainless steel with the logo embossed on the side.
A new innovative stainless steel nib with unconventional contours is exclusive to this series, yet interchangeable with the existing LAMY steel nibs. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge as well as a LAMY Z27 converter to get you started writing right away!
Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

I recently purchased myself a Lamy Aion.
Now this is a nice pen, especially since it still only has a steel nib. The entire thing is metal except the converter which is more than I can say for the Sheaffer 300's. The body has got this brushed, matte finish and the grip has a uniform matte feel to it. The nib is an extra fine that is exclusive to this pen and it writes beautifully!
I find this nib writes better than the standard Lamy extra fine nib. I find it a bit smoother and it's got this gradual leaf-style curve to it that really looks sharp!
The cap snaps on nicely and posts as well. I find that the posting isn't the best, but you can get it snugly on there so it won't fall off. Considering there are more metal components in this pen than the Sheaffer, it is actually lighter than they are which I found very surprising. The cap also has some spring to it which means you can pinch at the top of the clip and it'll open enough for you to clip it to your shirt easily which is a nice feature.
I would say this pen is largely comparable to the Sheaffer 300 in most respects but the build quality is definitely a little better.
For smaller hands, this might not be the pen you would want to invest in first as it is a little wide in the grip section. If you have larger hands or can otherwise deal with the width, it's a wonderful pen that won't break the bank on you. I personally wouldn't hesitate to swap Lamy's 14k gold nib onto it to make it a truly premium writing experience. That colour matching would look remarkable as well.
This pen will run you $71 USD, which is a similar price to the Sheaffer 300 at $70 USD. The Aion comes in a dark blue, dark green which I believe is being discontinued and black.

I'm not a voracious shopper, but instead prefer to exercise a lot of research and patience before making a purchase, especially when it comes to pens. I was introduced to the FP world just a couple years prior to this purchase, with the Pilot Varsity. I had shortly thereafter picked up a TWSBI Go, and was... dishearteningly disappointed. In the many months that followed I tried to become as familiar as possible with fountain pens without investing more money in them. I watched the Goulet Pencast as well as various other YT programs, so I was relatively in-the-know about what's out there and what to look for. As soon as I saw the Lamy Aion featured in a Pencast episode, it called out to me -- the green, specifically. I had to have it. The specs were on point as well as the design. Placed my order, got amped up in anticipation, fully aware I was setting myself up for disappointment again... but, nope! From the moment I unboxed the Aion to today I have been nothing but happy with this pen. The aesthetic is gorgeous, the color is perfectly dialed in, the weight and balance is spot on, I love the feel of the grip, and I even love the cap -- the seal as well as the orientation of the logo on the clip. I absolutely love every single little thing about this pen. Writes beautifully, and always ready to go (provided I haven't neglected it for too long). Cleaning and refilling is a breeze as well. FAQs about Fountain Pens
How do I fill a fountain pen with ink?
It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.
Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:
- Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
- Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
- Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
- Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
- Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen?
It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.
It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:
How often do I need to clean my fountain pen?
We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.
Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
My pen won’t write! What do I do?
First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.
We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.
If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.
