"Medium Fine" is a joke. More like "needle point"

I got this pen and love the weight, balance, price, and look of the pen.

However, there is nothing "medium-anything" about the nib. I should have known better of course, as there is such a disparity in nib sizes between Japanese and western pens. I would love for this to somehow be standardized - maybe using millimeter sizes? and I would love for Sailor to make a nib for this pen that's not an etching needle. I would buy it. As it is, if it were an actual medium-fine, by western nib standards, I would probably give the pen five stars.

Crisp line and clear ink color

Love that I can see the ink color on the nib feeder because it's a clear instead of black in the plastic color. I have a very small/condensed handwriting and usually get EF nib size. However, this medium fine nib works perfectly for me.

It's okay

This is my first Sailor and my 8th fountain pen. The nib is really stuff and I find it difficult to write with when compared to my other pens. I was looking for a budget model with a **** down cap, so went with this. It's okay.

I love this pen

I've never had a Sailor and figured this cheap one wouldn't be great, but it's amazing. I've used it every day this year without any problems. I might want to save for an expensive one now.

Blue Sailor 1911 Compass

This pen is a very reliable writer, no hard starts or skips. As with most Japanese pens you will need to order a nib one size larger than you normally would. This fine writes like a extra fine. I should know better and ordered a medium but since I don't have an extra fine I'm not disappointed. I use my pens frequently, rotate them as they run out and enjoy the sensory difference this pen gives while it's in rotation. It is about the size/feel of a Pelikan M 200. Would buy another.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Sailor ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
