Black As Night

I love the black line on the page. No messing around with shading or shimmer or sheen. Just a nice solid line. Love the samples. I'll be ordering some more as soon.

Great Ink!

Very wet and shiny from a Jinhao 159 with a Noodler's untipped flex nib. I don't think it shades at all, but I was looking for a dark and shiny, robust black and this is it. Takes a while to dry since this particular setup is VERY wet. I've got a Goulet two-tone EF nib that makes a super-tiny thin line I'm anxious to try it with. Does stain your fingers for a while, so don't spill it on your white sweatpants! This is a must-have ink for me, and I'm ordering a bottle right now.

A reddish black

I bought a sample vial of Onyx Black while trying to find a black that I liked well enough to buy a full bottle of. Having tried some of Diamine's other inks and being satisfied with those, I thought I would try this one. I received the ink sample, swabbed out a small q-tip's worth onto some bright white paper and found that after it dried, the ink takes on a very reddish color. Kind of like a burgundy ink with some black ink mixed in, if that makes it any easier to picture. It most definitely did not end up being as dark and truly black as the example swab on the product page here. Anyway, I inked up one of my pens with it and decided a swab isn't going to be entirely indicative of how the ink looks coming out of a pen onto paper. So, to give it a fair fight for my approval, I wrote with it on a sheet of Clairefontaine Triomphe blank 90g white stationary paper. On that same sheet, I wrote with De Atramentis Document Black and Herbin Perle Noire. Out of those three blacks, the only one that appears actually true black is the Herbin Perle Noire. That was yesterday. Today, I take that same sheet of Triomphe paper and before tossing it in the garbage, I decide I want to see how well the Document Black holds up to water. I thoroughly soaked the sheet of paper under the faucet front and back and will admit that the Document Black held up perfectly. No effect whatsoever from the water. The Herbin Perle Noire slightly washed away but is still very well survived. But this ink, the Diamine Onyx Black washed almost completely away! There is only the faintest of evidence that this ink ever existed on the sheet. This will explain my 'Low' rating for water resistance.

An Ink that grows on you!

When I first used this ink... I thought it sort of has a very faint shade of brown to it,... but the more I used it it seem to get darker, so it could just be me. This ink grows on you. Awesome ink!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
