Ink Samples Are Awesome

I have recently installed converters on my hand full of pens and purchased a bunch of ink samples. It would take FOREVER for me to use a bottle of ink considering that I write about one A5 page per day. This way I get lots of ink variety, I can match the ink to my pen (e.g. fancy pens get blue, the green pen has green ink, daily writers have black, and I have one demonstrator for red), and the cost isn't much more than I pay for standard, dull, boring cartridges.p.s. Goulet Pens is awesome. Most of my pens and supplies are from Goulet!

My favorite blue ink

I got a sample of Topaz, not thinking too much about it. I didn't anticipate anything special. Once I tried it, though, I fell in love with this color. The color does not look quite like the swab onscreen; instead, look at the writing sample. The color looks like that (depending on your screen). Topaz is a very well-behaved ink; not too wet and not too dry. And it looks a little different in different-sized nibs. Naturally, it's lighter in finer nibs, like a light blue. It ranges more toward a medium blue in a stub. It has a little bit of shading; nice when you can get it. It's hard to say just why I like this ink so much, except that it has become my favorite shade of blue ink. Now teal, that's another category entirely. But this is my favorite among standard blues.

A Fine Blue

I am new to fountain pens, so take my review with a grain of salt. The color is beautiful, and it flows nicely, I am learning that I prefer darker blues. This ink behaves well, and is easy to clean.

I really like this ink.

I've been using this in a early Wahl Oxford Juxtaposed with a very flexy 18k nib and like it a lot. I was worried it would be too light in color, but the pen writes fairly wet so I generally get the darker shades of the spectrum. I think I could use it at work without raising too many eyebrows. The ink flows well and shades as good as anything I've tried in this pen. It goes from light turquoise to medium blue depending on pressure and direction of stroke. It seems pretty easy to clean up and keeps feeding well when flexing. My one small complaint is that I experience a ton of nib creep with this pen. I've only used it in this Wahl though, so maybe it's not as prevalent in other pens. I might buy a bottle of it anyway. It's a great looking ink.

Topaz

This is my perfect blue. Bright Clean Happy. It dries quick and almost no feathering on half way decent paper. I think I have found my everyday ink!

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
