Uneducated Review

First off, I love the color of this ink. It's a beautiful unique blue, I think, for pens. It's a little more wet than I'm accostomed to but that may just my uneducated and uninformed side speaking as I just started using fountain pens. It's very smooth and the flow was great. I used a medium and an extra fine point and neither had issues with ink flow. I still like the waterman blue I have more though, for now.

Beautiful Shade of Blue and Well-Behaved

This ink is a great royal blue (the swab portrays it much duller than it truly is). I used this ink in a wet pen so I wasn't able to enjoy the fast dry time as much as I would have liked to but from what I've seen elsewhere it's pretty quick. Apart from that the ink behaves great and I encountered no issues. Overall, this is a beautiful color and well-behaved ink. Definitely on my shortlist for buying a full bottle.

Strange

I got a sample of Bernanke Blue just out of curiosity, just to see how fast the ink would dry. I don't usually get samples, but I was pretty sure I wouldn't want a bottle of this and I was right. It's a strange ink for me. It's a bright blue, a beautiful color, but it did none of what it's supposed to do. It didn't dry that fast unless I used it on very cheap paper (it took a moment to dry on Sustainable Earth paper, enough that a leftie who writes decently fast might smear a bit of it) and it didn't feather or bleed through anywhere as badly as people usually say it'll do. It didn't spread that much either. To be frank, I haven't even been able to make this ink feather. Maybe that part has to do with the fact that I put it in a Noodler's Konrad rollerball? Not sure, but it performed really beautifully in that way. I'm giving it three stars because it didn't dry as fast as it's advertised to (American Aristocracy, which I tried at the same time, dried faster, actually) but it's still beautiful and it performs really nicely otherwise. I wouldn't get it for the quick drying feature though because that didn't work at all for me.

My first experience with Noodler's

I got this as a sample because I was recommended it because I'm a left handed person. I was using cheap notebook paper to take notes with and I was surprised and shocked at the amount of bleedthrough with this ink. It was also very difficult to clean out of my pen.

Beautiful color!

The color of the ink is lovely and vibrant. The flow was great and I loved being able to sample it for myself before deciding if I wanted a whole bottle. The samples are also great if you want to experiment with a variety of inks, but have a more tight budget. It's definitely one I'd happily write with forever.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
