De Atramentis Document

Good substitute for the usual black or blue ink for formal work ☺

Good looking document ink

This ink is pretty great. I like all the de atramentis document inks but this one has a surprising features: it smells like smoke? At first I thought I was crazy but I had my wife smell it and she thought I'd put liquid smoke in my pen. Once it's dry it doesn't really smell, but my pen definitely smells like a bonfire right now.

nice warm brown

I use DA document inks for watercolor sketching. The warm brown color is very useful for nature, for sketching food, or for any situation where black would be too harsh. Using the DA document inks dilution liquid means you can mix a very light brown if you want your lines to be even more inconspicuous. DA Doc inks, in my experience, do not feather on watercolor paper or multimedia sketchbook paper. I've had several Lamy pens loaded with DA document inks for 6 months: no clogs or problems.

Did I get a bad sample?

I like writing in brown ink, and I've been switching to permanent inks (pigment-based or iron-gall) for my journaling. Naturally, I was excited to run across De Atramentis document brown. It is a pigment-based ink, and once it dries on the page it becomes absolutely waterproof. I'm leaning to pigmented inks because I find iron-gall inks to be too dry, although some great colors can be found. KWZ, Rohrer & Klingner, and others manufacturers offer among them a wide variety of attractive iron-gall inks. All of the pics I've seen of this document brown ink show it as a medium brown. But the sample I received writes as a very, very light brown, almost gold. I am writing in a Rhodia Webbie notebook with Rhodia / Clairefontaine 90 gsm off-white paper. If this is actually what the ink is supposed to look like, it is useless to me. The descriptive 'brown' shouldn't even be applied to this ink. Here's one possible solution: The De Atramentis line of document (pigmented) inks can be combined without loss of permanence. Thus, it should be possible to add a very small amount of DeA document black to the document brown to deepen the color. But that means buying a second expensive bottle of DeA ink. And since document brown turns out be document light-gold, who knows what the color would be after adding a little black?

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
