This LAMY joy AL black fountain pen has a silver aluminum cap and a long tapered black matte body, and an interchangeable silver stub italic steel nib. It comes with a LAMY ink cartridge, or it also accepts a LAMY Z28 converter to use bottled ink (sold separately). The triangular grip is helpful for proper hand/grip position while writing.

Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

nice pen for writing and calligraphy

I like the feel of the pen grip and the 1.9 nib is very smooth. I'm not sure it needed to have such a long barrel but it doesn't interfere in its function.

The Best

Very sturdy calligraphy pen. Of course it is. The Goulet Pen then adds their touch of goodness to the packaging and the whole experience.

Silky and Consistent

To be able to go get the Lamy Joy or a Pilot Metro for these price ranges puts all craft stores to shame. The ink is rich and consistent, the pen on the page is silky with a 1.9mm stub, and it works as well after capping and putting away for a week as it does the first time you put in the ink cartridge. It's an outrageous upgrade from anything you can find in a local shop anymore... I think they make those pens out of recycled nails and sandpaper. The long, tapered shape definitely evokes quill-reservoir pens. Nothing fancy here, either - just plastic and a really good nib. Great for calligraphy. The Pilot Metro is little nicer for a gift (and slightly less).

Nice starter

A solid choice for a starter calligrapher. The construction is done well, lighter materials, and very reminiscent of it's cousin, the AL Star. Cost is good for the quality of the pen. The nib is somewhat thin, so the broad strokes won't be SUPER broad, but they are noticeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this LAMY fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

This fountain pen can fill with proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, or from a LAMY converter.

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, which are available in a range of colors.

As for converters, LAMY does make two different converters - the red Z28, and the black Z27. All of their fountain pens (except the 2000) can accept the black Z27; typically this converter is included with the higher-end LAMY pens like the aion, cp1, scala, and studio. The red Z28 has additional knobs for a more secure installation that is compatible (and sold separately) on the AL-star, joy, and safari.

We've got a great video demonstrating both filling methods here:

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
