Red Rebellion

This red ebonite Noodler's Neponset fountain pen is fitted with a flexible three-tined music nib, which has a velvet pen stroke with the ability to greatly vary the line width to the users liking. It has a built-in slide piston mechanism for use with bottled ink.

The Neponset is a glimpse back in time to an era of legacies and war heroes. The New England Airship company, later renamed the Dartmouth Airship Co., the first of its kind in the United States, had a new CEO during a challenging time for our country. During the year of 1929 Nathan’s grandfather became CEO and one year later christened a new airship named the Neponset.

The shape of the Neponset pen is similar to the dirigible and is constructed of the original fountain pen material ebonite, which was vulcanized in 1844 by Charles Goodyear in Massachusetts whose company built the Neponset airship.

The Neponset is fitted with a three tined music nib, the "Vishnu Victory" nib in honor of the 2.5 million World War II allied soldiers of India as well as the reference to the source for the ebonite used in the pen and the original Neponset Blimp.

High hopes

I was really looking forward to using this pen, but one thing in particular has so disappointing that it has pretty much devastated my excitement. Upon removing this pen from its packaging, an offensive smell (which I can only describe as some rank combination of wet earwax and anal fluid) emanated from the entire pen. I was really shocked, because the condition of rest of the items in my order was of high quality (and odorless). I do not know if this was manufacturing error of my particular item or if I had not realized upon purchase that this item was actually previously used (I cannot imagine any other reasons at this time to explain the scent), but I immediately disassembled the pen parts to wash it (on the impression that scent was not structurally integral to the pen). The scent was removed from the pen's body, cap, and external part of the piston, but after I flushing the nib and piston with distilled water the scent still remained, seeming to emanating from inside in the piston's chamber. I thought that if I filled the pen with ink the scent be masked by the ink (I didn't really imagine that would do much, but I was getting frustrated from my disappointment), but now the ink in the piston stinks too whenever I write with it (which is not as much as I would like due to the smell). I guess I am hoping someone will get back to regarding how dispel the scent (if this is possible since it seems trapped in the piston's chamber in a way I am not sure how to access besides flushing), but if this is a general manufacturing issue (which, gauging from other reviews posted, seems unlikely) I can only recommend this pen if you do not have olfactory capabilities.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B
