A 2ml sample of Platinum Carbon Black fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial. This is slightly different than conventional fountain pen ink, because it is pigmented instead of dye-based. This makes it very permanent and lightfast, though it does require more diligent maintenance in your fountain pen. It's ideal for brush pens and fountain pens being used on paper where you need ink to dry on the surface instead of soaking in.

This waterproof, pigment-based carbon ink is highly regarded by artists, and is a standard for ink-washing and mixed media work where you need to draw a line that will later be washed overtop.

Caution: Pigmented inks are intended for use in fountain pens, though they require more diligent maintenance and should not be left to dry out in a pen. It is best to clean it from your pen at least once a week to prevent clogging. Certain pens may handle pigmented inks better than others.

Decent but not without it's flaws

I found the ink to generally be decent for what it is, however it suffers from a quite long dry time of around 35ish seconds (the slowest of all my inks I've tried so far). Additionally, when it comes to blackness I found it generally average especially compared to the noticably blacker Noodler's HoD Oh and for those who care, yes there is a small amount of nib creep with this ink.

Great water resistant ink

Bought the sample in order to try this ink. My main ink now is Platinum Black (dye based). So Carbon black is a tone darker, it looks more like black, while dye based Black looks like dark grey. Carbon black has similar tone to Noodler's black. And the line is uniform, without tone variations. In other aspects, except water resistance, Platinum Black and Platinum Carbon Black are very similar. So Carbon Black is a nice performing dark black ink with bonus - maybe the best water resistance in the market.

Great black ink.

Platinum Carbon Black is my first experience with pigmented ink. It does live up to it's reputation for being very black. It flowed well, dried fast enough and hasn't caused me any problems sooooo far.

Great consistency but not dark enough color

Writing with this ink (in a fine nib Preppy) feels really great, but it dries really light! The ink looks faded, like an old photocopy. Shaking the pen before writing doesn't make a difference. Besides the color issue, I love this ink. It flows smoothly, is not too wet or dry, and behaves well on cheap notebook paper (no feathering or bleeding).

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
