This Namiki Yukari Milky Way maki-e fountain pen was released in November 2016 by maki-e artisan Michifumi in Japan. It features the Togidashi Maki-e technique (burnished maki-e) and Raden techniques, depicting a sparkling cosmic galaxy scene. The pen has an 18k gold nib in size #10, fills via cartridge/converter (a CON-70 is included), and comes packaged in a wooden box with a bottle of ink.

The Yukari Collection vividly expresses the nature of the four seasons, which the Japanese have been familiar with since ancient times, by combining designs with various techniques such as Togidashi-Taka Maki-e (Burnished-Raised Maki-e) and Raden (Mother-of-Pearl). While being a size that can be carried and used every day, it harbors Japanese beauty down to the finest detail.

As these pens are truly one-of-a-kind pieces of art, they are warrantied for life by Namiki.

Please allow us up to several extra days for shipping of this pen. Please also note we are unable to accept a return of this pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.

First NAMIKI but not last

I bought this pen with a fine nib, but writes a thin line that is thinner than any other fine or extra fine pens from other makers that I have. I love it. It is also more convenient to write in normal paper or checks because of the fine nib (not messy). It is beautiful and also does not look like the other more traditional art on these pens which is not for everyone. I don't want a Shoki pen looking at me with those laser eyes. But I can enjoy some dragons or maybe sharks.

Everything I expected and more!

I had certain expectation from gold nib pens from my prior experience with my other gold nib pens, but this one was so SO much smoother than any other pens I had. The line thickness was just perfect, and the pen itself is....stunning, I could look at this for hours and appreciate the amount of work that went into the pen to create it!

A grail pen of stunning quality

This was a purchase I took my time to decide on. I wanted to be certain that the pen was truly exceptional. (Big thanks to Goulet's chat function! Customer Service answered a bunch of my final questions via chat.)Ultimately, what I was worried about was how disappointed I would be if the pen wasn't significantly better than the rest of the lovely, perfectly functional pens available from Goulet for much less. I'm so glad I was able to buy the pen. The Milky Way is truly stunning. It's beautifully made, gorgeous beyond belief, and wonderful to write with. One thing that I found odd is that even though the pen is nicely balanced when posted, I prefer to write with it unposted (that's contrary to my typical behavior). With Lamys, Pilots, Edisons, and most other pens I own, I prefer a F nib. But I chose a M for this Namiki, and I'm glad I did: it's perfect. I've attached a photo showing how it writes. Inked with Robert Oster Direct Sun, written in a Quo Vadis journal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
