This Conklin 1898 fountain pen is a Goulet exclusive, limited edition of only 100 pens, featuring a blue and turquoise resin made by Jonathon Brooks.

Conklin 1898 is inspired by the rich heritage of the Conklin brand, designed with comfort and durability in mind. This collection is suited to individuals looking for a well-sized, cigar shaped pen that provides a larger surface area for a comfortable grip while writing.

All writing instruments feature a cap ring with a Conklin original vintage pattern, initially used on the first self-filling pens produced by the company back in 1898. The ring also features the year the legendary Conklin pen company was founded by Roy Conklin in Toledo, Ohio. Together, these elements pay homage to the vintage Conklin era and its extraordinary legacy in the world of writing instruments. Lastly, each pen features Conklin’s distinctive “rocker style” clips, designed for a smooth clip-on action.

The Conklin 1898 fountain pen is offered with your choice of a reliable, smooth-writing German made JoWo #6 silver steel nib in extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, or 1.1mm stub, as well as the Omniflex flexible steel nib for variation in line width. Each Cushion Point nib displays the brand name and is marked with special crescent-shaped breathing holes. The Conklin quality control team tests each nib individually to ensure top quality writing performance.

Our note about the JoWo Omniflex nib: This flex nib will allow you to experience more bounce and softness than writing with conventional nibs. You can achieve some line variation with a little additional downward pressure, to a point. We recommend flexing the nib to about twice the line width that you would see without using any pressure. Please take care to avoid pressing too hard on the nib, as over-flexing could prevent the tines from returning fully to their original position and decrease or stop your ink flow.

The 1898 fountain pen comes with reliable standard international cartridges as well as a threaded converter. Each Conklin brand writing instrument is housed in a luxury gift box. Conklin 1898 collection is an ideal gift for any person in your life or for yourself, whether it’s used in their professional lives, home offices, or daily journaling.

We do our best to photograph the pens to show how they will appear in person, but due to the nature of the material, there will be some variation in the pattern seen here. This adds an element of uniqueness to the pen, with no two patterns being exactly the same. We cannot honor special requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this pen with ink cartridges? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses standard international ink cartridges, a common size which is available in many colors from various brands.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
