The LAMY AL-star is the aluminum big brother to the LAMY safari. The smoky grey translucent triangular grip section makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

This black aluminum AL-star comes with an interchangeable black steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size, and matching black trim for a fully stealthed out look.

This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away. If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter.

This color was previously the special edition for 2013, then became a regular edition in 2015.

Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

Lamy AL-star EF Nib

I took a gamble and bought this pen along with Noodler's Black ink as part of my foray into fountain pens, and I'm glad I did. I notice very little feathering with the EF nib on regular, 20-pound printer paper. There is also a good amount of feedback, which really helps me when writing in tight spots, like in the margins on invoices.

I can't speak to longevity yet, but I've owned my pen for almost two months now, and it still looks and works great. I actually left it for a couple of weeks, and after cleaning the nib a little, it began writing like it did when I had capped it.

The only thing I would warn people of is the triangular grip. I personally like it because it allows me to consistently grip the same place despite having to constantly pick up and set down my pen. Others who have a non-standard grip may find it uncomfortable.

Black magic?

Not really. But it is a well made pen with a bit of the good-for-the-conference-room look The fine nib gives a little feedback, but is a smooth writing one. The flow seems a little to the dry side, but is not what I would call a dry nib. No issues with hard starts or skips. This is easily a good everyday writer. 👍👍

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this LAMY fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

This fountain pen can fill with proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, or from a LAMY converter.

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, which are available in a range of colors.

As for converters, LAMY does make two different converters - the red Z28, and the black Z27. All of their fountain pens (except the 2000) can accept the black Z27; typically this converter is included with the higher-end LAMY pens like the aion, cp1, scala, and studio. The red Z28 has additional knobs for a more secure installation that is compatible (and sold separately) on the AL-star, joy, and safari.

We've got a great video demonstrating both filling methods here:

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
