Nib Guide

This TWSBI Kai fountain pen is made of a dark blue flecked acrylic resin, complemented by rose gold-plated trim, and is equipped with a rose gold-plated stainless steel nib, of comparable size to the TWSBI 580 nib. Like all TWSBIs, it comes with a benchmark piston ink-filling mechanism and has all detachable parts. An ink window allows you to see your remaining ink level.

While the pen cap will physically fit onto the back of the pen body in a way that would be considered ‘posting’, TWSBI recommends not doing so to avoid potentially scratching the barrel.

The TWSBI Kai is a limited edition and will not be produced ongoing.

TWSBI's belief is that it is important to allow the user to disassemble and reassemble the pen and completely experience the traditional aspects of owning and using a fountain pen. These pens also come packaged with a wrench and silicone grease. Neither of these accessories are intended to be used immediately, as they are for long-term care and maintenance. Additionally, please use extra care if you choose to disassemble the nib and feed, as the feed is very fragile.

elegant but not an everyday writer

Since neither the Edison Colliier nor the Kai post, I compared their feel in the hand and the feel of the nib on the paper. On both counts the Collier has significant edges on the Kai. The pen is elegant and will look stunning on an office desk, but It has too many flaws for it to do more than sit in a jar on mine.
TWSBI created superb pens with its minis and its 580's, but this seems like a reach too far for them. The 580 fine nibs are wonderful writers; the Kai not so much. It feels slippery on the fingers near the nib. No clear way to sense how much ink remains in the pen and the small window doesn't give a clue about that. The designers must have wanted to create a "show-stopper," but it leaves me cold.

Beautiful Pen!

Unbelievable value! This pen is a looker, details well planned and designed, excellent fit and finish, writes like a dream. Very happy with this pen and it looks and feels like a much more expensive pen.

TWSBI Kai fountain pen

A beautiful pen, it’s a little darker in hand than the stock images. I bought a broad as I am intending to have some nib work done, snd it is very broad, probably the broadest broad I have. If you’re wanting a more modest line width to use without modification, a medium or fine would probably be the choice.

The blue with gold accents are very handsome!

Blue Heaven

My experience was that I received this for Father’s Day. I have the Draco edition in medium in which I greatly enjoy using Diamine Writers Blood. Now I’m searching for the right blue ink for this. Both pens are very sturdy and fell like a million bucks…quite like my LEONARDO OFFICINA ITALIANA pens. This one is in fine and the difference between the Draco’s medium and the fine is significant. Maybe I just need a wetter blue ink than I’ve tried so far. Currently I’m using Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue which is just OK. It writes eagerly but with an above average feedback which I’d like to juice up and smooth out. Very very satisfied overall here.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!
