The LAMY AL-star is the aluminum big brother to the LAMY safari. The smoky grey translucent triangular grip section makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

This blue aluminum AL-star comes with an interchangeable silver steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away.

If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter.

Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this LAMY fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

This fountain pen can fill with proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, or from a LAMY converter.

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, which are available in a range of colors.

As for converters, LAMY does make two different converters - the red Z28, and the black Z27. All of their fountain pens (except the 2000) can accept the black Z27; typically this converter is included with the higher-end LAMY pens like the aion, cp1, scala, and studio. The red Z28 has additional knobs for a more secure installation that is compatible (and sold separately) on the AL-star, joy, and safari.

We've got a great video demonstrating both filling methods here:

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

Lamy AL-star, EF nib

I am new to fountain pens and purchased two (2) different pens of which this was one. Like the experience and like the pen. Will continue to experiment with fountain pens. Goulet handled my order perfectly and the packaging was well done.
I have subsequently made two (2) purchases since this intitial order. Having fun with fountain pens. I use mainly for journaling, but have recently incorporated into my work day.

Took me a while to catch on. Anodized aluminum in color is a pleasure.

Honestly is a great pen, very smooth, but I have my problems with it. It’s more me than the pen. I like heavy pens and I assumed since it was metal it would be. DUNCE!! It’s aluminum. Very light but smooth writer, great looks, and reliable.

First fountain pen

This is my first fountain pen and I absolutely love it! I was concerned about the grip because it sounded like some people were not fans, but I think it has actually helped in keeping a good writing position while learning. Currently I'm using the Lamy cartridges and the flow has been great. Worst part of the pen is really keeping from buying more pens right away, which I have failed :/ Shipping was fast and I loved how it was packaged. Will definitely be purchasing more products.
